PSNI Issues Fresh Appeal in 1969 Disappearance of Belfast Boys, Cites Bangor Train Lead

The Legacy Investigation Branch is revisiting the cases after renewed attention from the Lost Boys documentary alongside sustained family advocacy.

Overview

  • Eleven-year-old David Leckey and 14-year-old Jonathan Aven vanished from east Belfast in September 1969, last seen at homes on Memel Street and Sydenham Drive.
  • Detectives say the investigation remains open and unexplained, with all lines of inquiry to be pursued including any potential criminal offences linked to the disappearances.
  • Investigators are aware of reports the boys may have boarded a train to Bangor and want to hear from anyone who encountered them in any setting since 1969.
  • Police ask anyone with information to contact the Legacy Investigation Branch via 101 or [email protected].police.uk quoting RM14009442, or to use Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
  • KRW Law, representing both families, welcomed the renewed appeal and says it is working with PSNI as solicitor Owen Winters urges a centralised approach connecting similar historic cases.
