Providence to Close St. Vincent Pediatric ICU in Early November

Providence cites persistently low patient volumes as the reason for consolidating intensive pediatric care to larger regional providers.

Overview

  • The four-bed unit was empty for 155 days in 2024, and on most other days cared for only one patient, according to hospital leaders.
  • About 20 nurses and three physicians are affected, with Providence saying they may move into other roles within the system.
  • St. Vincent will continue pediatric services through its inpatient pediatric unit, neonatal ICU, the Gerry Frank Center and a 24/7 children’s emergency room.
  • Providence says Oregon Health & Science University and Legacy Health have indicated readiness to support pediatric intensive care needs in the community.
  • The move comes as Providence restructures services, including Seaside ending labor and delivery on Oct. 4, and it drew criticism from the Oregon Nurses Association.
