Proud Boys Member Sentenced to 5 Years for Assaulting Officers During Capitol Riot
Kenneth Bonawitz, described as one of the most violent rioters, forced a police officer into early retirement due to severe injuries.
- Kenneth Bonawitz, a member of the far-right Proud Boys extremist group’s Miami chapter, was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting at least six police officers during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.
- Bonawitz, who was carrying an eight-inch knife, was described as 'one of the most violent January 6 rioters' by the Department of Justice.
- One of the officers assaulted by Bonawitz, Sgt. Federico Ruiz, was injured so severely that he was forced to retire.
- Bonawitz was also sentenced to 36 months of supervised release following his time in prison and fined $2,000.
- More than 1,200 defendants have been charged with Capitol riot-related federal crimes, with nearly 500 receiving a term of imprisonment.
