Proton VPN Expands Free Tier With Canada and Norway Servers

Proton frames the move as a congestion fix for free users under its ad-free, no-logs model funded by paid plans.

Overview

  • General manager David Peterson announced the additions via posts on X on September 30 for Canada and October 3 for Norway.
  • The free plan now offers access to servers in eight countries: the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Canada and Norway.
  • Free users cannot pick a specific location, as the app connects automatically to the fastest available free server at the time of connection.
  • The new free locations are visible in the Proton VPN app and are expected to reduce crowding and improve speeds, especially for users near Canada and northern Europe.
  • Proton reiterates that the free tier has no data caps, no ads and no logging, with those claims backed by independent audits and paid subscriptions covering the costs.
