Proton Launches Sheets, an End-to-End Encrypted Spreadsheet

Proton pitches the tool as a privacy-first option with default encryption under Swiss data protections.

Overview

  • Sheets encrypts content, filenames, and metadata by default so even Proton cannot read user spreadsheets.
  • The app supports commonly used formulas, charts, real-time co‑editing, CSV/XLS imports, and granular view/edit controls.
  • It is available now in web browsers and in the Proton Drive app, and anyone with a Proton Drive account can use it for free with a 5GB tier.
  • Proton frames the release as an alternative to Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel, pointing to Big Tech data collection and AI assistants such as Gemini.
  • With Sheets alongside Proton Docs, Drive now offers an encrypted workspace spanning email, calendar, documents, and spreadsheets.
