Proton Launches 'Emergency Access' for Trusted Recovery Across Mail, VPN, Pass and Drive

Paid subscribers preauthorize up to five Proton contacts via the web for emergency recovery, with Proton asserting encryption remains intact.

Overview

  • Emergency Access went live on August 28 for all paid plans and is available through the Proton web dashboard.
  • Designated contacts must have Proton accounts; users add their email addresses and contacts receive a notice of their selection.
  • Access timing is user‑defined, allowing immediate entry or a wait period measured in days, weeks, or months.
  • Proton notifies the account holder when a trusted contact attempts entry, and access proceeds if no explicit denial is issued.
  • Settings can be changed or revoked at any time, and the feature covers Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Pass, and Proton Drive.
