- Designated contacts must have Proton accounts; users add their email addresses and contacts receive a notice of their selection.
- Access timing is user‑defined, allowing immediate entry or a wait period measured in days, weeks, or months.
- Proton notifies the account holder when a trusted contact attempts entry, and access proceeds if no explicit denial is issued.
- Settings can be changed or revoked at any time, and the feature covers Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Pass, and Proton Drive.
