Protests Escalate in Telangana’s Urea Crunch as Andhra Pradesh Receives Import Shipment

Official data show deliveries far below Kharif allocation, forcing rationing.

Overview

  • Telangana reports 5.62 lakh metric tonnes supplied against an 8.30 LMT allocation for April–August, with seasonal demand estimated at 10.48 LMT due to expanded paddy acreage.
  • Farmers queued for days in rain and staged road blockades at PACS across districts, with confrontations at MLAs’ offices and one Warangal farmer uprooting cotton after failing to obtain urea.
  • Andhra Pradesh received 10,350 tonnes of imported urea at Gangavaram and expects at least 25,000 tonnes by early September at Kakinada, Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu said.
  • Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy warned of on-the-spot suspensions over distribution irregularities, citing missed central supplies since April and an RFCL production halt.
  • Opposition BRS held a demonstration in Hyderabad with empty urea bags, blaming the Congress state government as reports also flagged over-the-cap sales of Rs 350–400 per bag.
