Protest in Pyrénées-Orientales Over Cattle Culls as France Logs 96 Outbreaks

France is pursuing eradication of bovine nodular dermatitis through whole-herd culls.

Overview

  • About 100 protesters tried to block the slaughter of roughly 80 cattle on Monday in the Pyrénées-Orientales before gendarmes removed them.
  • Authorities reported four brief detentions and one minor injury during the operation near Thuès-Entre-Valls and Fontpédrouse.
  • The prefect defended the cull as necessary to stop spread, noting that whole-herd depopulation is the state protocol and that affected farmers are offered compensation and psychological support.
  • Since June, officials have recorded 96 outbreaks and about 2,700 animals culled nationwide, including approximately 250 in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
  • Vaccination coverage in the department has reached about 90% with animal-movement limits in force, as unions and activists plan further protests including a rally in the Jura on Tuesday.
