Prosecutors to Seek Death Penalty in Killing of Retired Auburn Professor at Kiesel Park

A multi-agency investigation continues as court filings describe a killing during a kidnapping and a theft.

Overview

  • Lee County District Attorney Jessica Ventiere said prosecutors will pursue the death penalty against Harold Rashad Dabney III in the Sept. 6 slaying of Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle.
  • Dabney, 28, is charged with two counts of capital murder — during a kidnapping and during a theft — and is being held without bond.
  • The Lee County coroner reported multiple sharp-force injuries, and charging documents and local reports say the attack occurred on a park trail before the victim’s vehicle was taken.
  • Police say Schnuelle’s red Ford F-150 was stolen after the killing and was later recovered off Wire Road; her dog was found unharmed.
  • Auburn Police are leading an active probe with assistance from state and federal agencies, including the FBI, while forensic examinations proceed.
