Prosecutors Seek Immunity Lift for AfD MEP Arno Bausemer

The request would let investigators pursue dangerous bodily harm charges while the European Parliament's summer recess is likely to delay a decision.

Overview

  • The Staatsanwaltschaft Stendal has opened an investigation and applied via the Generalstaatsanwaltschaft to have Bausemer's EU parliamentary immunity lifted so prosecutors can question him and press charges.
  • Authorities say Bausemer is accused of striking a 14-year-old with a blunt instrument during a dispute over an election poster and that the youth suffered light injuries; Bausemer later acknowledged using a baseball bat.
  • Prosecutors confirmed a separate traffic stop where Bausemer voluntarily gave a blood sample that measured 1.25‰ and said that the drunk-driving matter and the assault probe will be joined later.
  • The charge being pursued is dangerous bodily harm, which prosecutors note can carry a prison term from six months to ten years if convicted, and Bausemer has so far not answered dpa inquiries.
  • The AfD's Saxony-Anhalt board says it will review the publicly reported allegations internally and the federal board will await judicial findings; the immunity vote must be taken by the European Parliament and is expected to take weeks to months because of the summer recess.
