Overview

  • Prosecutors lodged the new charges on Monday, a day after Imamoglu was questioned at Istanbul’s main courthouse in his first trip outside prison in seven months.
  • State-run Anadolu reported suspicions that personal data of Istanbul residents were transferred in an effort to obtain international funding for his campaign.
  • Former campaign chief Necati Ozkan and Tele1 editor-in-chief Merdan Yanardag were charged in the same case, with Yanardag arrested Friday and his channel placed under a government-appointed trustee.
  • Imamoglu dismissed the accusations as “nonsense,” asserting he has no connection to intelligence services.
  • Hundreds to about a thousand supporters rallied outside the courthouse as CHP leaders spoke, and the government reiterates that the judiciary operates independently and targets corruption.
