Prosecutors Charge Illinois Father After Shot at Bird Killed His 14-Year-Old Daughter

A second suspect faces concealment charges, with an additional count for obstruction.

Overview

  • David A. Schultheis, 34, was charged Sept. 2 with reckless discharge of a firearm in the July 21 death of his daughter, 14-year-old Emma Schultheis, authorities said.
  • Investigators say he fired into a brick building at a bird, extending only his arm into the doorway, and the bullet passed through the bird and a window before striking Emma outside.
  • The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department investigated with assistance from the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit and transferred the case to the State’s Attorney’s Office on Aug. 26.
  • Schultheis voluntarily surrendered at the Monroe County Jail and was released pending court, while 58-year-old Karen A. Schwarze is arranging to turn herself in on the new charges.
  • Prosecutors allege Schwarze hid the .40-caliber pistol used in the shooting and attempted to dissuade others from speaking with law enforcement during the early investigation.
