Prosecutors Charge Brayan Camacho Calleja in Deadly Downtown Indianapolis OWI Crash

Investigators point to airbag-module speed readings plus a .108 blood alcohol level as key evidence.

Overview

  • The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office filed six felony counts Wednesday, including two Level 4 charges for causing death while operating a vehicle intoxicated, reckless homicide, operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license, and three counts of criminal recklessness.
  • The Sept. 20 crash occurred around 3 a.m. at E. Ohio and N. East Street when a red Dodge Charger hit a southbound GMC Yukon, ejecting passenger Aaron Radford, who later died, while the Lyft driver suffered two broken ribs.
  • Airbag Control Module data showed the Charger at 71 mph five seconds before impact and 94 mph about one second prior on a street with a 25 mph limit.
  • Toxicology measured Brayan Camacho Calleja’s BAC at .108, officers documented signs of impairment, and a passenger told investigators they had consumed a lot of alcohol and ran multiple red lights before the collision.
  • Authorities report he was not found in Indiana’s BMV system and presented a Mexican Consulate Card for identification, and jail logs show he remains held on a federal detainer.
