Prosecutor Opens Harassment and Threats Probes After 17-Year-Old’s Suicide on RER Tracks

Surveillance and witness accounts indicate a deliberate act, with any link to alleged bullying still unproven.

Overview

  • The Meaux prosecutor confirmed that a 17-year-old student from Lycée Honoré-de-Balzac died by suicide on January 13 after lying on the rails at Villeparisis–Mitry-le-Neuf.
  • Authorities opened investigations into the causes of death and a preliminary probe for alleged school harassment that may have led to suicide, an offense punishable by up to ten years in prison.
  • Two additional preliminary inquiries were launched into violent threats against school leadership and alleged moral harassment following social media posts and gatherings outside the lycée.
  • According to the prosecutor citing the family, the student reported being harassed since December 2025 and met the headteacher on the day she died, when she was told about her supposed share of responsibility.
  • The rectorate set up a psychological support unit for the school community and said it is working closely with justice partners as the prosecutor cautioned that the early investigations will be complex.
