Overview
- Prosecutor General Paulo Gonet filed an opinion on Nov. 18 at Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court opposing the extinction of Mauro Cid’s two-year sentence.
- Citing case records, Gonet noted Cid’s preventive detentions ran from May 3 to Sept. 9, 2023, and from Mar. 22 to May 3, 2024, which do not total two years.
- Cid’s defense contends periods under restrictive measures, including electronic monitoring and other court-imposed limits, should count toward serving the sentence.
- Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the case rapporteur, has already ordered execution of the open-regime term with a night curfew, bans on weapons, social media and contact with other suspects, and authorized Federal Police security for Cid and his family.
- Gonet also recommended that the defense be formally asked to state whether Cid and his relatives wish to enter the federal witness-protection program proposed by the Federal Police.
