Programs Announced for Germany’s Open Monuments Day on Sept. 14

New listings detail site access under a theme that asks whether heritage is invaluable or irreplaceable.

Overview

  • Thousands of sites across Germany will open on Sunday, Sept. 14, for the Tag des offenen Denkmals coordinated by the Deutsche Stiftung für Denkmalschutz, held under the motto “Wert-voll: unbezahlbar oder unersetzlich?”.
  • In Würzburg, four 90‑minute tours of the renovated Mozartareal start at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30 from Hofstraße 11, led by Dr. Antje Hansen, Dr. Pia Weinkamm, Almut Schaffrath and Claus Reder.
  • The Würzburg program also opens the Ehlerskeller at Reuterstraße 16 for short visits at 10:30 and 14:00; the last surviving beer cellar of its era has been protected since August 2021.
  • Munich‑area highlights include Bajuwarenhof Kirchheim with guided tours from 11:00 to 17:00 alongside a summer festival, plus timed offerings at St. Stephanus Putzbrunn, the Romanesque St. Aegidius, the restored Kreuzweg stations, AschheiMuseum talks at 11:30 and 15:00, and a two‑ride “Radl‑Denkmal‑Tour” at 14:00 and 16:00.
  • In Essen, about 30 monuments plan programs featuring new archaeological findings at Burg Altendorf, hourly tours and a 17:00 concert at the Alte Synagoge, and openings at Villa Hügel and Schloss Borbeck with afternoon tours.
