Profepa Transfers 22 Illegally Traded Wild Animals to Authorized Care Facilities

Profepa is caring for species listed on Mexico’s NOM-059 alongside CITES protections, having launched legal proceedings to repair environmental damage.

Overview

  • Profepa agents seized 22 wild animals at an itinerant stand near Querétaro’s El Tepetate market after the merchant failed to prove their legal provenance.
  • Nine of the confiscated animals are listed under Mexico’s NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 and Appendix II of CITES, granting them national and international protection.
  • The operation recovered five iguanas, four axolotls, one veiled chameleon, ten red-eyed tree frogs, and two white-bellied hedgehogs.
  • All specimens have been transferred to authorized environmental management units where their dignified treatment and conservation care will be ensured.
  • Profepa has opened a legal-administrative procedure to repair environmental harm from the illegal trade and reiterated its commitment to combat wildlife trafficking.
