Profepa Rescues 40 Protected Animals From Illegal Transport on Cárdenas–Coatzacoalcos Road

Authorities identify the corridor as a trafficking hotspot, citing cruel practices like peroxide dyeing that injure birds.

Overview

  • The operation took place on September 18–19 near the Sánchez Magallanes toll booth in Tabasco following citizen reports, with Profepa confirming details on September 23.
  • Profepa worked with the Policía Municipal de Huimanguillo and the Policía Estatal de Veracruz to intercept vehicles carrying wildlife for illicit sale.
  • Seized species included 7 Amazona albifrons, 3 Amazona autumnalis, 20 Eupsittula nana, 4 Iguana iguana, and 6 Crocodylus moreletii, all protected under NOM-059, with Amazona autumnalis also listed in CITES Appendix II.
  • Animals were found in inhumane, overcrowded conditions, including birds tied to wooden rods and reptiles confined in cardboard boxes and improvised carriers.
  • The specimens will be moved to authorized UMAs for medical care, the vehicles remain at the disposal of the FGR, and authorities have not reported arrests or identified suspects.
