Profeco Names Processed and Imitation ‘Manchego’ Cheeses in Mexico, Flags Mislabeling in New Tests

The consumer agency's lab review of 29 products pinpoints labeling breaches that blur the difference between real cheese versus substitutes.

Overview

  • Profeco’s Consumer Lab tested 29 items sold as manchego in September–October 2025 against NOM-051 and NOM-223, checking labeling, composition, fat, protein, moisture and sodium.
  • Five products presented as manchego are processed cheeses that breach NOM-051: Lala, Great Value, Kraft Singles, Zwan Premium and FUD.
  • Four offerings are classified as imitation manchego: Alpino, Aurrera, El Campito and El Sierreño.
  • Profeco deemed Flor de Alfalfa and Golden Hills “not truthful” for overstating fat content, and cited Charrúa for missing manufacturer and storage data and Casa del Campo for batch and expiry printed on an adhesive label.
  • Noche Buena reduced-fat leads protein content at 27.87%, followed by Noche Buena lactose-free at 25.34% and a Spanish manchego at 22.97%, with guidance to read labels carefully and keep products at 2–6 °C.
