Profeco Lab Test Ranks 49 Powder Detergents in Mexico, Flags Misleading Claims

The consumer agency urges shoppers to rely on standardized lab results rather than marketing slogans.

Overview

  • Profeco’s National Consumer Protection Laboratory tested 26 laundry and 23 multiuse powders under NOM-189 criteria using 20°C cycles, 206 mg/L water hardness and standardized stains.
  • Brands performing strongly on anti-redeposition and stain removal included Ace Oxígeno Activo, Ariel, Persil, Bold 3, Carisma, Foca and Viva.
  • The weakest results on persistent spinach stains were found for El Milagro, La Morena, Precíssimo Biodegradable and Precíssimo Floral.
  • Several products failed to substantiate package promises such as “frescura duradera,” “acción profunda” or “quitamanchas total,” and Profeco also reported labeling and legend noncompliance.
  • Net contents generally matched declarations, yet Profeco cautioned that foam or strong fragrance do not equal better cleaning and that poor performance can drive extra washes and higher costs.
