Profeco Flags High Sugar and Labeling Failures in Powdered Chocolate Study

The agency will track flagged brands with possible precautionary or legal measures.

Overview

  • Profeco’s consumer lab ran more than 3,400 tests on 32 chocolates in powder and chocolate‑flavored mixes and published the results in the August issue of Revista del Consumidor.
  • Several products topped 80 g of sugar per 100 g of powder, and prepared drinks delivered 8–14 g per 100 ml, meaning a typical cup can exceed 30% of an adult’s recommended daily sugar limit.
  • Recurrent breaches of NOM‑051 and NOM‑186 included missing nutrition data per 100 g, warning seals placed off the main display panel, ambiguous date legends, and shortfalls in net content.
  • Named irregularities included Chocolate Ibarra, Ibarra Premium, Ibarra Canelate and Choco Choco for net‑content or date issues, and Choco Milk and Cal‑C‑Tose lines for misformatted nutrition info and misplaced warning seals.
  • Lower‑sugar options such as Bur Chers Chocomonk, ValorCao Premium, Swiss Miss and Ghirardelli contain non‑caloric sweeteners that health authorities say are not advisable for children, and Profeco urges consumers to check warning seals and limit intake.
