- Five products marketed with the word “manchego” were identified as processed cheeses that can mislead shoppers: Lala, Great Value slices, Kraft Singles, Zwan Premium and Fud Americano Manchego Ahumado.
- Beyond those findings, Profeco reported labeling and composition breaches including missing manufacturer address and storage instructions on Charrúa (bulk), lot and expiry placed on an added sticker for Casa del Campo, and fat content gaps on Flor de Alfalfa and Golden Hills versus their labels.
- The study covered 29 products: 17 Mexican manchego cheeses, one Spanish Manchego with denomination of origin, one reduced‑fat manchego, one lactose‑free manchego, five processed cheeses using “manchego” and four imitations.
- All items met their declared net weight, and Profeco also highlighted better‑performing options such as Alpura, Bové, Carranco, Esmeralda, La Villita, Nutri and Tribus de Fuego Chimex.
- Profeco said mislabeling may face precautionary measures under NOM‑051 and related norms, and advised consumers to distinguish true manchego made with dairy fat from processed or imitation products.
