Overview
- Between March and May, Profeco analyzed 40 products sold as ham and found 13 that did not comply with Mexico’s NOM-158-SCFI-2003 standard.
- The violations include marketing non-ham items as genuine ham and misreporting nutritional content, with several products containing more sodium or different fat levels than declared.
- Products flagged by Profeco include Chimex Ibero Barcelona, Nutri Deli, Zwan Premium, Bafar Americano, Bafar Lunch and Benji.
- Profeco has sent formal notices to Cofepris and SADER to initiate regulatory reviews that could lead to sanctions, immobilizations or market withdrawals.
- Under NOM-158-SCFI-2003, ham must contain at least 55% leg meat and adhere to strict protein, fat and additive limits to ensure accurate labeling and consumer safety.
