Profeco Finds Peanut Snack Brands Understate Sodium and Breach Labeling Rules

An official lab review of 35 products names items with higher measured sodium, noting missing “Exceso de sodio” seals required by NOM-051.

Overview

  • Mexico’s consumer agency tested 35 peanut snacks—17 salted and 18 Japanese style—and found several with sodium levels above what their labels declare.
  • Salted products flagged include First Street, Golden Hills, Golden Nuts Barcel, Great Value, Nature Sun Español, and Sol, with some measurements far exceeding stated values.
  • In Japanese-style peanuts, Great Value lemon flavor, Selecto Brand, and Snack Club with Tajín showed measured sodium well above their declared amounts.
  • Golden Hills salted peanuts and Nature Sun Español failed to display the mandated “Exceso de sodio” front-of-pack warning despite qualifying for it under NOM-051.
  • All tested items met net weight and rancidity standards, while Profeco urged consumers—especially those with hypertension—to read labels and consider less-processed options.
