Procession Brings Fallen Uxbridge Officer Stephen LaPorta Home as Probe of Icy Route 146 Death Continues

Investigators are seeking witnesses to reconstruct a crash that happened during dangerously icy conditions.

Overview

  • A multi-agency escort Friday is moving LaPorta’s body from the state medical examiner in Westfield to the Uxbridge Police Department and then to a funeral home, with departure set for 11 a.m.
  • LaPorta, 43, was outside his cruiser assisting a motorist around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday when a tractor-trailer struck him on Route 146 north near Exit 6.
  • The tractor-trailer driver was treated for minor injuries and the assisted motorist was unhurt, and authorities have not announced any charges.
  • Massachusetts State Police and the Worcester County district attorney are leading the investigation and ask anyone who was in the area then to call 508-832-9124.
  • Uxbridge and state officials have honored LaPorta with black bunting, a half-staff flag order and a community procession, and he is survived by his wife and 13-year-old child.
