Overview
- A randomized, multi-centre trial enrolled 212 men on active surveillance for low-risk prostate cancer and followed them for four months.
- All participants received a phytochemical-rich supplement containing broccoli, turmeric, pomegranate, green tea, ginger and cranberry, while half also took a tailored Lactobacillus probiotic.
- PSA fell more with the probiotic plus supplement than with the supplement alone, with reductions of 44.6% versus 13.1%.
- MRI results in the probiotic group showed 85.5% stable disease, 6.7% regression and 7.8% progression, compared with 82% stable and 18% progression with placebo.
- Men reported improvements in urinary symptoms and wellbeing, the findings were published in European Urology Oncology, and Prostate Cancer UK welcomed the data but urged further research before changing care.
