Probes Widen After String of Killings and Attacks in Buenos Aires and Santa Fe

Investigators are pursuing femicide leads, reviewing detentions, launching manhunts.

Overview

  • An 18-year-old UBA student, Matilda López Sanzetenea, died after a fall from a second-floor balcony in San Telmo, and her boyfriend, who had scratch-like injuries, was detained by order of Criminal Court No. 5 as the case is investigated as possible femicide.
  • In Villa Luro, prosecutors examine a double stabbing of a mother and daughter with no signs of forced entry, working a main hypothesis of a robbery by someone the victims may have known based on crime-scene findings.
  • The Damián Strada homicide will face appellate review on November 13, with the prosecution citing cell-tower data, security video and phone-chip use to uphold preventive detention of two accused coauthors and two alleged cover-up participants.
  • A retired City police officer shot and killed one of two alleged motochorros after a suspected bank follow-out in El Palomar; a second suspect fled and investigators seized evidence as a fiscal oversees the case.
  • In Villa del Parque, an 80-year-old neighbor was formally charged with injuries aggravated by gender-based violence after punching a 23-year-old, and the national road-safety agency moved to suspend her license over separate videos showing reckless driving.
