Pro-Palestinian Protesters in California Block Military Supply Ship Bound for Israel

Protest organized by Arab Resource and Organizing Center temporarily halted ship's departure; demonstrators claim vessel was set to transport military supplies to Israel amid recent Hamas attacks and tensions.

  • Over 100 demonstrators, organized by the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC), converged on the Port of Oakland to protest a cargo ship, the Cape Orlando, they believed was carrying military supplies bound for Israel.
  • Protesters chanted messages in support of the Palestinians and against U.S. military support for Israel, while some managed to climb onto the ship and others locked themselves to it.
  • While it is not confirmed that the ship carried weapons, AROC argued that the U.S. government continues to use American ports to facilitate the alleged genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
  • The protests came in the wake of continued tensions and recent attacks between Israel and Hamas, following a terror attack by Hamas on October 7 that resulted in over 1,400 Israelis dead.
  • Despite attempts by the protesters to halt the ship's departure, the entity eventually succeeded in leaving the port several hours later, heading potentially to Tacoma, Washington, where more protests by pro-Palestinian protesters are expected.
  • The protests occurred a day after the U.S. House of Representatives approved the allocation of $14.3 billion in federal aid to Israel by a 226 to 196 vote.
