Pro-Palestinian Protesters Disrupt Operations at JFK and LaGuardia Airports

New Year's Day travel disrupted as police restrict access to terminals and key routes to manage protest calling for cease-fire in Israel-Hamas war.

  • Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted traffic and operations at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on New Year's Day, causing significant delays on one of the busiest travel days of the year.
  • The protest, organized by the Palestinian-led activist group 'Within Our Lifetime', was part of a series of demonstrations calling for a cease-fire since the Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7.
  • Police temporarily blocked off the Belt Parkway, a major route to JFK, and restricted access to JFK’s Terminal 4 and the AirTrain service to ticketed passengers and employees only.
  • After being turned away from JFK, the protesters headed towards LaGuardia Airport, but were also blocked from entering.
  • The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the region’s airports, reported no arrests and stated that it had deployed safety and security measures to ensure an uninterrupted travel experience at JFK.
