Pro-Palestine March in Mexico City Concludes With Only Minor Incidents

Swift medical response coupled with precautionary policing measures kept the march limited to minor scuffles and injuries.

Overview

  • About 1,000 protesters gathered at the Ángel de la Independencia and marched along Paseo de la Reforma toward Alameda Central, Hemiciclo a Juárez and Plaza Tlaxcoaque to voice support for Gaza.
  • Police from the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana seized retractable batons, chains, fireworks and rockets from a hooded subgroup before withdrawing to monitor the march from a distance.
  • Paramedics from the Escuadrón de Rescate y Urgencias Médicas treated around 11 people, including one individual hospitalized after a head injury caused by falling speakers, and also attended to injured officers.
  • City officials notified nearby businesses and residents in advance and deployed officers equipped with helmets, shields and fire extinguishers to deter vandalism.
  • Participants carried a giant Palestinian flag and placards demanding an end to what they called genocide in Gaza, the opening of humanitarian corridors and the suspension of Mexico–Israel diplomatic ties.
