Pritam Singh Launches Supreme Court Appeal Over False-Testimony Conviction

The appeal follows a February ruling that fined the Workers’ Party leader S$14,000 for wilfully lying to a parliamentary committee.

Overview

  • Singh appeared on November 4 before Justice Steven Chong to challenge both his conviction and sentence for giving false testimony to the Committee of Privileges.
  • Defence counsel argued the trial judge overlooked key evidence and stressed inconsistencies in Raeesah Khan’s accounts and the context of her “take it to the grave” message.
  • Justice Chong said the appeal turns on two phrases attributed to Singh, including the alleged “take it to the grave” remark on August 8 and “I will not judge you” on October 3.
  • The judge questioned Singh’s lack of action between August 8 and October 3, as the defence cited giving Khan time, legislative priorities, and personal matters.
  • Singh was found guilty on February 17 after a 13-day trial and fined S$7,000 per charge under the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act, which did not disqualify him from office and he later retained Aljunied GRC with 59.68 percent of the vote.
