Princess of Wales Calls for End to Addiction Stigma During Awareness Week

The message anchors the Forward Trust’s campaign using new Ipsos data to highlight prevalence and barriers to seeking help.

Overview

  • In a statement released on Nov. 24, Catherine said addiction is a complex mental health condition that should be met with empathy and support, not fear, shame or judgment.
  • An Ipsos survey for the Forward Trust found 53% of 2,124 UK adults have personal experience of addiction or know someone who does, with one in ten reporting personal experience.
  • Among those with direct experience, 53% said they would be uncomfortable telling an employer, and sizable shares reported discomfort discussing it with family, friends or a GP.
  • The poll also found 81% agreed people with addiction should be treated as individuals who are struggling and need help.
  • Former England captain Tony Adams, the Forward Trust’s chairman of trustees, appears in new campaign films urging anyone struggling to reach out for support during Addiction Awareness Week, which runs 23–30 November.
