Princess Leonor Rejoins Elcano in Gijón to Continue Naval Training

Leonor’s return highlights Spain’s naval traditions through public ship visits that set the stage for her upcoming officer commissioning.

Overview

  • On July 3, Princess Leonor rejoined the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano in Gijón, marking her first visit to the city as Princess of Asturias and resuming her naval instruction.
  • Both the Juan Sebastián de Elcano and the frigate Blas de Lezo will be open for public visits from July 4 to 7, with access organized by order of arrival and a reinforced Line 6 bus service.
  • Prior to her transfer back to the Elcano, Leonor took part in live-fire exercises on the Blas de Lezo off the Canary coast under Vice Admiral Juan Bautista Pérez Puig.
  • Following the Gijón stop, the Elcano will call at Ferrol from July 9 to 11 and reach Marín on July 13, where on July 16 the guardiamarinas will receive their officer commissions.
  • This phase aboard the Elcano completes the second stage of Princess Leonor’s multi-branch military education before she begins Air Force academy training in September.
