Overview
- The imperial pair traveled by ferry from Tokyo’s Takeshiba Pier on November 22 and were welcomed by residents at Okada Port on Izu Oshima.
- They visited Oshima Memorial Park in the area hardest hit by the 2013 Typhoon No. 26 landslide, offering flowers at the monument to the 36 dead and three missing.
- At the park they heard accounts from residents, with Princess Kiko calling it an important place and Prince Hisahito noting ongoing disaster drills connecting the firefighting corps and islanders.
- The visit marked Prince Hisahito’s first official duties on a remote island and his first public commemoration at a natural-disaster site.
