The sale at Julien's Auctions in Hollywood broke the previous record for the most expensive dress worn by Diana to be sold at auction, previously held by a 1991 Victor Edelstein velvet gown.
Designer Jacques Azagury, who created several pieces for Diana, expressed his delight at the ongoing interest in her fashion legacy.
Also sold at the auction was a pink chiffon blouse worn by Diana in her 1981 engagement portrait, which fetched $381,000, nearly four times its original estimate.
