Princess Anne Receives ‘Dendrobium Anne’ Honour at Singapore’s National Orchid Garden

The orchid naming formed part of a two-day visit marking 60 years of UKSingapore diplomatic relations.

Overview

  • The Princess Royal was presented with the purple hybrid and its formal birth certificate by National Parks Board chief executive Hwang Yu-Ning.
  • She described the gesture as “very special” during a brief ceremony in the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ VIP collection.
  • Anne paused at the ‘Dendrobium Elizabeth’ named for Queen Elizabeth II, noting the usually yellow bloom appeared green as it had not fully opened.
  • Accompanied by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, she signed the guest book and posed for photos with British high commissioner Nikesh Mehta OBE and Hwang.
  • The garden’s tradition includes six orchids named for British royals, including tributes from 1972 for Queen Elizabeth II and 2012 for the Prince and Princess of Wales, and on departure onlookers waved to the couple.
