Prince William to Launch Princetown Community Fund

He has asked for the Duchy to divert the £1.5 million annual Dartmoor Prison rent into local regeneration from 2026–27.

Overview

  • The Prince of Wales will travel to Princetown on Tuesday to formally unveil The Princetown Community Fund and meet local groups involved in the village’s recovery.
  • Devon Communities Together will deliver the fund, which will offer grants from £500 to £40,000 and provide application support with at least £250,000 available to start.
  • William requested that the £1.5 million a year paid for the 2022 Dartmoor Prison lease be removed from his personal Duchy income and redirected to community projects from the 2026–27 financial year.
  • Investigations published in 2024 showed the Duchy agreed a 25‑year, £1.5 million‑a‑year lease of Dartmoor Prison in 2022, and the prison has stood empty since July 2024 after dangerous radon levels were found in accommodation areas.
  • The Princetown fund is part of a wider Duchy plan to invest more than £500 million over the next decade in housing, local economies, renewable energy, farming resilience and environmental recovery, a shift that could bring longer‑term jobs and services to the Dartmoor area.
