Prince William Opens Global Humanitarian Memorial in London, Decries Attacks on Aid Workers

He used the opening to press for stronger protection of aid workers, citing 385 deaths last year with about 300 already this year.

Overview

  • The artwork by Michael Landy, commissioned by the Humanitarian Memorial Committee, features 15 green human-sized figures arranged in a circle with gaps for visitors to complete it by joining hands.
  • Each figure carries a true account from people who delivered or received aid, with stories supplied by agencies including Oxfam, Save the Children and Care International.
  • After his remarks, the Prince met staff from MSF, MAG, UNRWA, Islamic Relief and Norwegian People’s Aid, as well as bereaved families and survivors of targeted attacks.
  • He cited crises from Ukraine and Sudan to Myanmar, Haiti and the wider Middle East, praising workers in places such as Gaza for sustaining a thread of shared humanity.
  • The memorial at Gunnersbury Park honors aid workers who died in service and also celebrates those who continue to risk their lives to help others.
