Prince William Launches Indigenous-Led Amazon Fund During Rio Earthshot Visit

The initiative directs resources to legal aid, emergency support, rights awareness.

Overview

  • Speaking at the United for Wildlife summit in Rio, William warned of a “nature crisis,” citing 1.7 million hectares of Amazon cleared in the past year and 120 environmental defenders killed or disappeared in Latin America in 2024.
  • He announced a partnership between The Royal Foundation, the Coordination of Indigenous Organisations of the Brazilian Amazon and The Podaali Fund, with support from Rainforest Foundation Norway and Re:wild, to create the first indigenous-led fund for the Brazilian Amazon.
  • The program will prioritize legal aid for frontline defenders, an emergency support fund for those in immediate danger, rights education, and shared monitoring of threats.
  • William said the ranger insurance drive launched last year is ahead of schedule, with more than 6,000 rangers insured toward a five-year target of 10,000.
  • He met Earthshot finalists at Christ the Redeemer ahead of tonight’s awards in Rio and is set to carry the agenda to COP30 in Belém, where he is expected to join Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
