Overview

  • Prince William made a surprise visit to Princetown’s restored peatland to engage local farmers, fire crews and conservation partners in the first phase of the project.
  • The 130-page Landscape Vision sets out re-establishing seasonal grazing, restoring peatlands and creating wooded river valleys to combat erosion and carbon release.
  • The Duchy of Cornwall, which owns about 68,000 acres or 28% of Dartmoor, is collaborating with the Central Dartmoor Landscape Recovery Project and Natural England to coordinate public and private investment.
  • Met Office research warns of increased summer heat stress for livestock and more extreme winter rainfall that could undermine blanket peatland without timely intervention.
  • The plan also includes large-scale natural flood management, prioritising native grasslands and providing affordable housing for landscape managers to bolster rural resilience.
