Primorye Surgeons Debut Axillary Thyroid Procedure and Complete Complex Intestinal Reconstruction

Health officials plan to offer the axillary technique to eligible cases following favorable early recoveries.

Overview

  • On November 11 in Vladivostok, Krai Clinical Hospital No. 2 performed Primorsky Krai’s first transaxillary endoscopic hemithyroidectomy, placing the hospital among the first in the Russian Far East to use the method.
  • The patient is preparing for discharge and is expected to resume normal activities within 7–10 days without needing hormone replacement therapy.
  • Surgeons cited benefits of the axillary access such as minimal soft‑tissue trauma, lower risk to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroids, preserved neck mobility, and the absence of a neck scar.
  • Deputy chief surgeon Andrey Merena led the thyroid operation, and regional endocrinologist Olga Tsygankova described the adoption as a notable advance for the region’s care.
  • In a separate case, regional surgeons performed a four‑hour reconstructive operation to close a colostomy and restore bowel continuity for an SVO participant, with a satisfactory condition and normalized intestinal function reported on day seven.
