• Police Chief Jerry Holmes confirmed Garry Chapman is no longer employed following an internal review that Mayor Sam Heflin upheld.
• The Sept. 6 pursuit began over moving violations and suspected DUI, left I-65, and ended at the Highway 36 and U.S. 31 intersection in Hartselle.
• The fleeing driver, Archie Hale, allegedly ran a red light and hit a minivan, killing 17-year-old Tristan Hollis and sending several others to hospitals.
• Hale faces a murder charge and additional counts including attempting to elude, DUI and reckless endangerment, and he remains jailed without bond.
• Chapman’s attorney contends he followed policy, says the department cited a failure to reassess pursuit risks, and notes speeds in the chase approached 90 mph.
