MPs Push Law to Strip Prince Andrew’s Titles as Met Reviews Alleged Smear Plot

Andrew has stopped using his Duke of York styling, leaving Parliament as the only route to remove titles permanently.

Overview

  • London’s Metropolitan Police said it is actively looking into reports that Prince Andrew asked a protection officer in 2011 to obtain damaging information about Virginia Giuffre.
  • York MP Rachael Maskell said she is minded to reintroduce a Removal of Titles Bill, while SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn urged legislation to take titles from Andrew and others linked to Epstein.
  • Government ministers, including Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, said they support the palace’s recent steps and would be guided by the royal household rather than act unilaterally.
  • Buckingham Palace has updated official references to style him simply as Prince Andrew, with UK media reporting his Duke of York styling has been removed from the royal website.
  • Giuffre’s posthumous memoir, due Tuesday, sets out fresh allegations that Andrew denies; he previously settled her U.S. civil case in 2022 without admitting liability.
