President Murmu Nominates Four Eminent Professionals to Rajya Sabha

  • President Droupadi Murmu exercised her Article 80(1)(a) powers on July 12 to appoint four individuals to seats vacated by retiring nominated members.
  • Harsh Vardhan Shringla, former foreign secretary and chief coordinator of India’s G20 presidency, joins the Upper House alongside Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, the prosecutor in landmark terror cases.
  • The cohort also includes C. Sadanandan Master, a Kerala educator and grassroots activist who survived a 1994 political attack, and Dr. Meenakshi Jain, a Padma Shri–winning historian.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the nominations on X, highlighting the nominees’ contributions to India’s foreign policy, legal framework, social development and scholarship.
  • Set to take their seats in the upcoming monsoon session, the new members are expected to infuse specialized knowledge into parliamentary deliberations.
