Prepared-Pasta Listeria Outbreak in U.S. Reaches 27 Cases and 6 Deaths

Investigators traced the outbreak strain via federal testing to pasta ingredients from Nate’s Fine Foods distributed to major grocery chains.

Overview

  • CDC and FDA report 27 illnesses across 18 states, including 25 hospitalizations, six deaths and one pregnancy-associated fetal loss.
  • Routine FSIS testing in March detected Listeria in a FreshRealm chicken fettuccine product, and genomic sequencing later linked contaminated pasta to the outbreak.
  • Nate’s Fine Foods expanded recalls of precooked pasta varieties and says it is cooperating with the FDA and customers while noting it does not sell directly to consumers.
  • Retailers and prepared-food brands that removed or recalled items include Trader Joe’s, Kroger, Walmart, Albertsons, Giant Eagle, Sprouts Farmers Market, Demers Food Group and Home Chef.
  • Health officials urge consumers to check refrigerators, discard recalled prepared-pasta products and clean storage areas, with special caution for pregnant people, older adults and immunocompromised individuals.
