Preparation Intensifies for Sunday’s Karneval der Kulturen Parade in Berlin

Secured barriers, intensive police deployments, traffic restrictions are designed to streamline Sunday’s procession.

Overview

  • The festival continues through Pentecost Monday following Saturday’s colourful children’s carnival in Kreuzberg.
  • A three-kilometre route from Proskauer Straße along the Frankfurter Allee to Berolina Straße on Karl-Marx-Allee will host 68 groups and more than 4,000 participants in Sunday’s parade.
  • Organisers expect around 650,000 spectators for the main parade and hope to match last year’s total turnout of about 1.1 million festival-goers over four days.
  • Since Saturday morning, Karl-Marx-Allee has been narrowed to two lanes near the former Kosmos cinema and full street closures will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday to accommodate the procession.
  • Bicycles, alcohol, large bags and other bulky items are banned along the parade route, and barriers have been deployed to prevent unauthorised vehicles.
