Premature Deaths from Heart Disease in England Reach Decade High
British Heart Foundation warns of worst heart care crisis in living memory amid rising death rates.
- Premature deaths from cardiovascular disease in England reached 80 per 100,000 people in 2022, the highest rate since 2011.
- More than 39,000 people under 75 died from cardiovascular disease in 2022, the highest number since 2008.
- The British Heart Foundation (BHF) warns that the UK is in the grip of the worst heart care crisis in living memory, with every part of the system providing heart care damaged.
- The BHF attributes the rise in deaths to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, pressure on the NHS, and a failure to address risk factors such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity.
- The Department of Health and Social Care asserts that the government has taken significant action to reduce cardiovascular disease and its causes, and is investing almost £17 million in a new digital NHS health check.
