Premature Baby Delivered at Burning Man After Mother Unaware of Pregnancy

Burning Man confirms the Aug. 27 delivery and the newborn’s airlift to a Reno NICU.

Overview

  • Kayla and Kasey Thompson of Salt Lake City said they did not know she was pregnant before she went into sudden labor in their RV at Black Rock City.
  • A nearby OB‑GYN, neonatal and pediatric nurses, Black Rock Rangers, and event medical staff provided improvised care and moved the family to the Rampart clinic.
  • The baby girl, named Aurora, weighed about 3 lbs 9.6 oz and measured 16.5 inches, and she remains in a Reno neonatal intensive care unit gaining strength.
  • Because of space and conditions, Aurora was flown to Reno without her parents, who traveled separately by ground through storm‑affected roads; the parents have since been discharged and are staying in Reno.
  • The family’s relatives launched a GoFundMe to help cover NICU care, travel and lodging, as Burning Man organizers offered congratulations to the new parents.
