Premature Baby Defies Odds to Celebrate First Christmas at Home

Born at just 25 weeks and weighing 1lb 10oz, 14-month-old Iarla Ace has overcome severe health challenges to join his family for the holidays.

  • Iarla Ace, born prematurely at 25 weeks in October 2023, spent 127 days in the hospital overcoming life-threatening complications, including a brain hemorrhage and bowel obstruction.
  • The infant underwent five surgeries and required intensive care before being discharged to his family’s home in Castlecaulfield, Co Tyrone, in February 2024.
  • A major milestone was reached recently when Iarla’s feeding tube was removed, allowing him to eat normally for the first time, marking significant progress in his development.
  • His parents, Lindsay and Matthew Ace, expressed gratitude for the medical teams at Belfast’s Royal Maternity Hospital and Craigavon Area Hospital, as well as support from charities like TinyLife and Shine.
  • This Christmas marks a joyful contrast to last year’s difficult holiday, as the family looks forward to celebrating together without hospital visits.
