Overview
- Prem Rugby and the RFU issued a joint statement on Wednesday saying their priority is to expand the top flight with English clubs and to reach 12 teams by the 2029–30 season.
- The Men's Professional Rugby Board will assess applicants by set entry criteria rather than promotion, with the league office judging playing standard, finances, infrastructure and geographic contribution.
- Any club wanting to join will face large upfront costs, including a reported P‑share of roughly £20m–£23.5m plus the obligation to fund a Premiership Women’s Rugby programme.
- The WRU has told shareholders it will keep four Welsh URC teams through the 2027–28 season while it reviews its professional model after reporting an £18.1m loss, but it has signalled interest in English competition as part of that review.
- A Welsh move into the Prem would convert it into a cross‑border league and therefore needs RFU approval, making governance, commercial terms and stakeholder negotiations the key barriers to any Anglo‑Welsh shift.
